American discus thrower Valarie Allman has disclosed on why every athlete should engage in dancing sessions for their own benefit.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist ,who won titles at Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024, and clinched a bronze at the 2022 World Athletics Championships says her background in dance gave her a physical and mental edge that most athletes overlook.
“I think it would be really fun if all athletes had to do some kind of dance training,” Allman says. “Dancers have such athleticism, coordination, balance, core strength. That really relate to any kind of athletic endeavor.”
How Does Dance Help?
While dance and discus might seem worlds apart, Allman sees a direct connection. The grace, rhythm, control, and explosive precision demanded in both disciplines are what have made her one of the most dominant figures in the sport.
“As a dancer, you have to perform,” she explains. “You go on stage and do a movement you’ve practiced over and over and now, the ring is my stage. The throw happens in a second and a half. It has to be precise. That performative element has helped me along the way.”

Allman made history in 2022 by becoming the first American woman to win a world championship medal in the discus throw. But beyond the medals, her message is resonating with athletes across disciplines. The dance isn’t just for the stage it’s a powerful tool for performance, composure, and control.
“It’s something I didn’t realize would be so helpful until I got deeper into my athletic career,” she says. “But now I tell people: take a dance class. It’ll change the way you move, compete and maybe even win.”
Valarie Allman, will be out tomorrow trying to aim to maintain her grip on Diamond League supremacy. She is set to compete against toughest rivals including China’s Feng Bin, the 2022 World Champion and Paris 2024 silver medallist.
