Nairobi, Kenya — Renowned long-distance runner Hellen Obiri has revealed a key component of her training program: Pilates. The two-time world champion says she enjoys Pilates exercises for their role in enhancing flexibility and building strength.

Meanwhile, Hellen Obiri starts her day early, waking up around 6 a.m. to prepare for training.

“I do like to wake up in the morning around 6 am to start my preparation, to take my breakfast and to go out for training with my team,” she said.

Despite the demanding running sessions, Hellen Obiri makes time for Pilates, which she describes as her favourite workout.

“But I do honestly like to do my Pilates. So, that’s my favourite workout,” Obiri disclosed.

Pilates, which is an exercise movement that focuses on controlled movements, flexibility and core strength, complements Obiri`s endurance training.

The low-impact workout helps athletes improve muscle tone, balance, and injury prevention — essential for long-distance runners.

Moreover, experts note that incorporating Pilates can enhance athletic performance by promoting body awareness and strengthening stabilizing muscles. For Hellen Obiri, this means maintaining peak condition and reducing the risk of overuse injuries common among high-mileage runners.

Obiri’s endorsement of Pilates highlights the diverse training techniques most elite athletes use to stay competitive. Her commitment to a well-rounded fitness regimen underscores the importance of flexibility and strength alongside endurance in achieving top performance.
