Organisers of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025 have revealed the official design of the gold, silver, and bronze medal that will be awarded to athletes this September, just 100 days before the world’s top competitors gather in Tokyo for the 20th edition of the event.

Crafted with passion and purpose, these medals symbolize more than just victory. They celebrate the remarkable journey each athlete takes to reach the podium. The design process included valuable input from Japan’s junior and high school athletics stars. Also, discussions with young athletes and design experts, resulting in medals that represent ambition, momentum, and growth.

The Front

The front of the medal showcases dynamic stripes extending beyond the logo’s original boundaries. This includes Tokyo’s city code “TYO” stylised as an athletics track reaching outward. This design represents connection, unity, and the global spirit of sport.

On the back, a polished mirror-like finish allows each medalist to see themselves as champions for the first time. However, a dedicated plate will be engraved with the athlete’s name, country code, and event inside the stadium. This will make every medal personal and unique.

The medal case is crafted from locally sourced Tama wood. This is by paying tribute to Tokyo’s natural heritage and reflecting the organisers’ commitment to sustainability.

Mitsugi Ogata, President of the Local Organising Committee, said:
“This design is the result of a truly collaborative effort between design experts and young athletes. We hope it becomes a source of motivation for the athletes and a lasting memory for fans around the world.”

Meanwhile, medal ceremonies will be held at the open-air Medal Plaza outside Japan National Stadium. It will be offering fans an intimate and memorable experience with the newly crowned champions.

The World  Athletics Championships will be held in Tokyo from 13-21 September 2025. More than 2000 athletes from some 200 countries will come to Tokyo to take part. It is one of the world’s biggest sporting events. The first event was held in Helsinki, Finland.
