American track star Sha’Carri Richardson took a moment to recognize Alexis Ohanian, entrepreneur and husband of tennis legend Serena Williams, for his unwavering support of women’s sports.
In a recent post on social media, Richardson praised Ohanian for “believing in women’s sports when so many don’t.” She added, “I see you. Thank you for making space, even when it’s not convenient.”
Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, has become a vocal advocate for gender equality in sports. He’s a founding investor in Angel City FC, a women-led soccer team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and continues to push for more opportunities and visibility for female athletes.
Athlos
Ohanian , launched his all-women track meet called ‘Athlos’ last year, which featured some of the fastest female athletes in the world competing for the ultimate title.
Along with great performances on the track, the event was also curated in a fan-focused manner with the aim of promoting the track and making it popular like other sports during the off-season.
The first Athlos track meet was a big success. Alexis Ohanian shared plans to make the next one even better. As he gets ready for the 2025 edition, Ohanian announced on social media that top athletes Sha’Carri Richardson, Tara Davis-Woodhall, and Gabby Thomas will now be part of the event as founding advisor-owners.
In one of the interviews with the league, Sha’Carri Richardson revealed why she decided to join Athlos as a founding advisor. The American sprinter said she’s excited to challenge herself and give her best in the races ahead, aiming to deliver an amazing performance.
Meanwhile, Ohanian, 42, has also invested in women’s football previously, as the largest shareholder in American club side Angel City FC until it was sold in 2024. For now, he has a seat on Chelsea Women’s board. This is after purchasing a 8-10% share, believed to be worth around £20m.
“This is a landmark day in the history of Chelsea Women. Also, for women’s football in Europe and beyond,” said Aki Mandhar, chief executive Chelsea Women.
