The 2025 Wanda Diamond League season delivered a thrilling upset at the Shanghai leg as American sprinter Christopher Bailey stormed to a career-defining victory in the men’s 400m, while Olympic champion Quincy Hall faltered in his long-awaited return to the track.

The 24-year-old Bailey announced himself as a new force in the quarter-mile, clocking a personal best of 44.17 seconds to claim gold in a stacked field. His composed finish held off Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori (44.32) and rising teammate Busang Collen Kebinatshipi (44.63), who secured second and third, respectively.

Bailey’s win was a statement, outclassing seasoned rivals including Kirani James, the 2012 Olympic champion, who finished fifth (44.94) in a tight battle with American veteran Vernon Norwood (44.93).

All eyes were on Quincy Hall, the reigning Olympic champion, who was racing for the first time this season after withdrawing from earlier meets due to injury. However, the American struggled, finishing eighth in 45.99—well off his personal best of 43.40.

Hall, who missed the Paris 2024 relays due to injury, showed signs of rust in his return. While his time marked a season best, it was far from the dominant performances that cemented his status as one of the world’s top 400m runners.

Botswana continued to assert itself as a powerhouse in the 400m, with Ndori and Kebinatshipi proving their consistency on the Diamond League stage. Ndori, last year’s breakout star, once again edged out Kirani James, while the 22-year-old Kebinatshipi impressed in just his second Diamond League appearance.

With Bailey’s star rising and Hall still working his way back to peak form, the 400m landscape looks more competitive than ever. The next Diamond League stop will be Doha, where the world’s best will continue their quest for dominance ahead of the World Championships.
