Nyayo National Stadium Nears Completion of Critical Track Revamp

Nyayo National Stadium is poised to complete its significant tartan track overhaul, as officials confirm the resolution of a crucial supply issue.

Barnaba Korir, the Nairobi chairman for Athletics Kenya, has provided an optimistic update, indicating that installation will conclude by early July. This progress comes as a relief, given the upcoming athletics calendar.

Meanwhile, the stadium’s upgrade holds particular importance for Kenya’s athletic future. Athletics Kenya plans to host the trials for the World Championships, set for August 1-2 in Tokyo.

Before this, ongoing construction at Nyayo Stadium forced organisers to relocate the sixth Kip Keino Classic to the Ulinzi Sports Complex, which received an upgrade to meet World Athletics standards.

Final Piece of the Puzzle Arrives

Barnaba Korir has revealed that the project had faced a significant delay due to the unavailability of a specific type of glue essential for the track’s installation.

However, that obstacle is now removed. “We received assurance that the missing glue is now available,” Korir stated in an interview with KBC Sport.

He further explained that contractors will commence work immediately upon their arrival in the country, expected by the end of this month.

The government has played a crucial role, providing necessary resources to expedite the process. Korir emphasised that while the ground preparation is already complete, the focus now shifts to the contractor to execute the final phase at the Nyayo Stadium.

This timely completion will ensure the track is ready well in advance of the African Nations Championship, scheduled for August 2-30 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

With this vital component secured and governmental support, Nyayo Stadium is on the cusp of welcoming top-tier athletics back to its modern facility. The athletics community eagerly anticipates competition returning to the newly installed track.
