Hicham El Guerrouj, famously known as “The Prince,” stands as one of the greatest middle-distance runners in history.

Over a remarkable career, Hicham El Guerrouj competed 83 times in the 1500 meters and won an astonishing 81 of those races. His dominance on the track remains unparalleled, as he set a world record of 3:26.00 in the 1500 meters—a record that has stood unbroken for over 25 years. This feat alone cements his place in athletics lore.

Unbeatable Records and Historic Wins

Moreover, El Guerrouj’s mastery extended beyond the 1500 meters. He also holds the world record in the 2000 meters.  Another testament to his extraordinary talent and endurance.

His records have withstood the test of time, highlighting his exceptional speed and strategic racing ability. What truly sets El Guerrouj apart is his unique achievement of defeating two of the greatest distance runners of all time—Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Hicham El Guerrouj made history by winning gold in both the 1500m and 5000m events. He beat Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge in the thrilling 5000m final, finishing in 13:14.39, just 0.20 seconds ahead of Bekele and 0.71 seconds ahead of Kipchoge.

At 29 years old, Hicham El Guerrouj was notably older than Bekele, who was 22, and Kipchoge, who was 20. His experience and tactical skill allowed him to outpace the younger, rising stars and secure a rare distance double last achieved 80 years earlier by Paavo Nurmi.

Hicham El Guerrouj: A Legacy of Excellence and Dominance

After a decade-long career, Hicham retired with a legacy unmatched by any middle-distance runner since. His consistency, speed, and tactical brilliance made him a formidable opponent on any track.

Notably, no athlete in the years following his retirement has come close to replicating his level of dominance. Thus, he has made his career a benchmark for aspiring runners and a source of inspiration for fans worldwide.
