Finnish President Alexander Stubb made headlines during his historic state visit to Kenya by going for a run in Nairobi’s Karura Forest. This informal event brought together President Stubb, his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba. Several celebrated Kenyan Olympic athletes also graced the event.
The run symbolised the warm ties and shared passion for sport between Finland and Kenya. Coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the Karura Forest run stood out as a highlight amid the official meetings. President Alexander Stubb has been on a three-day visit from May 12th to 14th, 2025. The visit offered a relaxed setting for cultural exchange and camaraderie. Blending diplomacy with personal connection. The presence of former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, known for his leadership in Kenya’s sports sector, added significance to the gathering.
Joining the group were Olympic champions, including David Rudisha, the world-record-holding 800m runner, and Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. A Multiple world and Olympic medalist in long-distance events; and Julius Yego, the world champion javelin thrower.
Their participation highlighted Kenya’s rich sporting heritage and the role athletics plays in the country’s identity. The run allowed these icons to share stories and inspire the Finnish delegation, strengthening people-to-people ties beyond formal diplomacy.
Alongside the run, President Alexander Stubb engaged in high-level talks with Kenyan President William Ruto, focusing on expanding cooperation in education, renewable energy, peace mediation, and multilateral diplomacy. The visit also included a keynote address at the EU-Kenya Business Forum and interactions with students and experts at the University of Nairobi.
This blend of formal and informal engagements underscored the deepening partnership between Finland and Kenya.
