Star Athletes to Watch at the European Athletics Team Championships

The 2025 European  Athletics Team Championships (ETC) will take place at the Estadio Vallehermoso in Madrid, Spain, from 26 to 29 June.

This prestigious event will bring together elite athletes from 12 of Europe’s top nations to compete across 37 disciplines ranging from sprints and jumps to throws, distance races, and relays. Russia and Belarus remain absent due to their ongoing suspension following the invasion of Ukraine.

Among the headline names is Femke Bol. She is the reigning European and World 400m hurdles champion. Bol will test herself over the flat 400m for the Netherlands on 28–29 June. She will be joined by teammate Lieke Klaver, a key relay figure and top contender in the 200m. Also, there is Nadine Visser in the 100m hurdles and rising 400m talent Jonas Phijffers.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh leads Ukraine

Ukraine, recently promoted back to the top division, brings serious firepower in the high jump. World record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh leads the women’s team, while Oleh Doroshchuk, the current world leader at 2.34m, aims to dominate the men’s event.

Sweden will pin its hopes on the incomparable Mondo Duplantis. Mondo is the reigning Olympic, World, and European pole vault champion. He set a new all-time best in the men’s pole vault for the 12th time in his career. This came by achieving a clearance of 6.28m at a Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.

Also representing Sweden is discus titan Daniel Ståhl, who has retooled his training following a difficult 2024 season. The reigning world champion will look to return to peak form in Madrid.

Jazmin Sawyers

Great Britain named a formidable 42-athlete squad. This included six Paris Olympic relay medallists and long jump star Jazmin Sawyers. After recovering from a torn Achilles that sidelined her in 2024, Sawyers returns to British colours for the first time since the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.

Sprinter Toby Harries, quarter-milers Sam Reardon and Lina Nielsen are included. Also in the mix are seasoned sprinters Desiree Henry, Bianca Williams, and Imani-Lara Lansiquot. They are all medalists at previous major championships. They add depth to the British relay squads.

Meanwhile, Ireland will contest the second division in Maribor, Slovenia, with a 46-strong team that includes seasoned sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin, a finalist at European and world indoor levels. Lavin played a key role in helping Ireland gain promotion from the third tier in Silesia in 2023.

The Championships arrive at a crucial moment in the season, offering a vital benchmark ahead of the Paris 2026 European Championships and the 2027 European Games in Budapest.

Strong squads from France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy are expected to challenge for top honours, promising an exciting four days of team-oriented track and field action in the heart of Madrid.
