The Eldoret High Court descended into chaos on Thursday as frustrations boiled over during the murder trial of Kenyan athletics star Agnes Tirop. Tirop’s estranged husband, Ibrahim Rotich, who is the prime suspect, failed to appear once again. Thus leading to the protests.

Two-time World Championship Bronze Medalist and Recent World Record Breaker

Ibrahim Rotich, charged with the brutal murder of the celebrated long-distance runner in October 2021, has been missing since February. Despite a warrant issued in March, police have struggled to locate him.

Investigating Officer Corporal Philip Ndeto told the court, “The suspect switched off his phone, and efforts to trace him have been hampered.” Authorities remain tight-lipped about leads but admit tracking Rotich has proven difficult.

Courtroom Proceedings Disrupted

The judge’s decision to adjourn the hearing for the fourth time was unwelcome as Tirop’s family and human rights activists present demanded justice for Agnes Tirop.

Protestors filled the courtroom, chanting slogans and holding placards bearing Tirop’s image, demanding justice. “We are tired of waiting. This is an injustice,” shouted one demonstrator.

Meanwhile, activist Kimutai Kirui from the Centre Against Torture accused the judiciary of corruption. Questioning why Ibrahim Rotich was released despite warnings.

However, Judge Robert Wananda granted a one-month extension to locate Ibrahim Rotich, setting the next hearing for July 23. He reminded the court that Rotich had been denied bail four times before finally being released on a KSh 400,000 bond with strict conditions, which he has since violated.

The athletics community remains in mourning over Agnes Tirop tragic death. The 25-year-old, a two-time World Championship bronze medalist and recent world record breaker, was found stabbed at her home in Iten. Her murder shocked Kenya and the global sports world alike.

Despite overwhelming evidence, including CCTV footage and a confession note, the suspect’s disappearance continues to delay justice. As the search intensifies, the nation watches closely, demanding accountability for one of Kenya’s brightest athletic stars.
