In one of the most eye-catching performances of the 2025 track season, Donavan Brazier made a triumphant return to the 800 meters. Dovan has been away from the competitions for nearly three years, but his comeback is one of a kind.
At the Saturday TOAD Fest in Nashville, Donavan Brazier clocked a commanding 1:44.70, winning by over two seconds. Signalling that the American middle-distance star is far from finishing despite a long and challenging journey.
Brazier’s race splits—52.09 seconds for the first lap and 52.61 for the second not only showed a controlled but relentless pace, thus allowing him to leave the field behind. On the other hand, runner-up Shane Streich finished in 1:47.20, while 2023 NCAA champion Will Sumner, himself recovering from injury, placed fifth in 1:49.80. This dominant display marked Brazier’s fastest 800m since February 2021, when he ran 1:44.21 indoors.
Danavan Brazier Injury
Donavan Brazier last raced in July 2022 at the World Championships in Eugene, where an early exit preceded two Achilles surgeries and a lengthy recovery process. His path included battling bursitis and a fractured tibia sustained during the 2021 Olympic Trials. A situation that made him part ways with longtime coach Pete Julian. Unfortunately, he spent 2024 largely sidelined, focusing on healing and rebuilding.

However, despite these setbacks, Brazier’s dedication never wavered. Training stints in Flagstaff under the guidance of coach Mike Smith, combined with a measured return to racing, culminated in this impressive showing.
Meanwhile, Donovan’s 1:44.70 ranks sixth nationally this year. Moreover, he narrowly misses the World Championship qualifying standard, setting the stage for a compelling USATF Outdoor Championships this summer.
However, Donavan Brazier remains realistic but optimistic.
“I didn’t have too many expectations,” he said after the race. “It’s just about going through the motions again—travel, pre-race routine, all that stuff I had to relearn.”
He also praised the current crop of U.S. 800m runners, including Bryce Hoppel and Josh Hoey. Further acknowledging how the competition has intensified during his absence.
