Elina Tzengko’s hopes for a fourth consecutive Diamond League win came to an end on Thursday evening as Japan’s Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi soared to victory in the women’s javelin throw at the Oslo Diamond League. In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Bislett Stadium, Kitaguchi delivered a season-best throw of 64.63 metres to claim top honours.

World leader Adriana Vilagoš of Serbia pushed Kitaguchi throughout the tightly contested competition but ultimately finished second with 63.78 metres. South Africa’s Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane du Plessis secured third with her own season-best of 62.77 metres, while Tzengko, who opened strongly with a 62.61-metre throw, finished fourth

Kitaguchi’s victory adds to her impressive legacy. At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, she won bronze, becoming the first Japanese woman to medal in a throwing event at a global championship.

A year later, she clinched gold at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest with a dramatic final throw. Her dominance continued at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she claimed the gold medal, further solidifying her status as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

With this latest triumph in Oslo, Kitaguchi reaffirms her place at the pinnacle of women’s javelin throw.
