Can This Be a Golden Opportunity for Team USA as Powerhouse Rivals Withdraw from the 2025 World Athletics Relays

With several powerhouse nations opting out of the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, the stage may be set for Team USA to seize what could be a golden opportunity. The American squad, despite their surprising disqualification in the heats at last year’s World Athletics Relays, made a remarkable recovery by clinching the Olympic gold in Paris. That triumph, marking their 19th Olympic 4x100m title, was a testament to the team’s resilience and depth.

While the gold-winning quartet of Christopher Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin will not be part of this year’s U.S. relay squad, Team USA still boasts a deep pool of talent capable of rising to the occasion. With nine of the past ten world titles to their name, the Americans will head into the competition as defending champions, hoping to reinforce their dominance on the global stage.

Among the teams that remain in contention, Canada is looking to build on their Olympic success with Andre De Grasse leading the charge. Alongside teammates Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, and Brendon Rodney, De Grasse aims to capture a World Relays title, though the absence of some key figures may test the team’s depth.

Meanwhile, South Africa presents a formidable challenge, with sprint veteran Akani Simbine joined by rising stars Bayanda Walaza and Bradley Nkoana. Adding even more firepower to their roster is 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who will compete alongside Lythe Pillay, Zakithi Nene, and Gardeo Isaacs.

The Great Britain & Northern Ireland announced late changes to its squad following a string of injuries to key athletes. Sprint stars Jeremiah Azu, Ama Pipi, Lewis Davey, and Alex Haydock-Wilson have withdrawn ahead of the event.

Jamaica remains a threat as always, with Kishane Thompson and Ackeem Blake expected to push for a top finish. Australia, led by Lachlan Kennedy and Torrie Lewis, will also be targeting competitive performances, particularly in the shorter relays.

Even with notable absences shaking up the competitive landscape, the 2025 World Athletics Relays are shaping up to be a thrilling contest. But with key rivals out of the way and a tradition of excellence behind them, Team USA is undoubtedly in a strong position.
