The newly crowned Boston Marathon champion John Korir has pledged to donate part of his Ksh19.5 million ($150,000) prize money to Transcend Talent Academy, a little-known school in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya.
Korir’s triumph at the 2024 Boston Marathon was nothing short of spectacular. The 28-year-old athlete broke away from the pack after the 30km mark, leaving his competitors struggling to keep up. He crossed the finish line in an impressive 2:04:45, securing the third-fastest time ever recorded in the race’s storied history.
Korir joined his elder brother, Wesley Korir, as a Boston Marathon champion, making them the first siblings to ever win the prestigious race. Wesley claimed his title in 2012 before venturing into politics, but his passion for athletics and education has continued through his philanthropic efforts.
John Korir announced during his post-race interview as reported by Fox Sports, that he would allocate a portion of his earnings to Transcend Talent Academy. The school, founded by Wesley Korir in 2009 through the Transcend Foundation, provides full scholarships to talented and underprivileged students in Kenya.
The academy operates on a unique model, identifying promising young athletes through trials and offering them a comprehensive education alongside specialized athletic training. The school grants full scholarships covering secondary education from Form One to Form Four to students who demonstrate both talent and financial need. The school also helps graduates enter universities, with Wesley securing U.S. athletic scholarships for top students.
Since its inception, Transcend Talent Academy has grown significantly, currently supporting 160 students. The institution celebrated its first Form Four graduating class in 2024, with 22 alumni already earning scholarships to study in the U.S. The school serves as a vital pipeline for young Kenyan athletes, equipping them with the skills to excel in both sports and academics.
Wesley Korir funds the school through personal resources and partnerships, driving its operations. However, John has increasingly contributed to the cause as his own marathon career has flourished. His latest donation follows his victory at the Chicago Marathon in October 2023.
John sharing his success with Transcend Talent Academy reflects the Korir family’s strong belief in education and sports’ power. By nurturing young talents, they shape future champions and empower leaders who will meaningfully contribute to Kenya’s development and success.
Korir’s act of generosity sends a powerful message to athletes and public figures worldwide. His legacy will extend beyond his athletic achievements.
