Blindfolded but Focused – Anderson Peters on Letting the Coach Lead the Way

‎The Grenadian star, Anderson Peters isn’t just a two-time world javelin champion—he’s a living example of what happens when talent meets trust.

‎Anderson, who captured global headlines with his gold-medal throws at the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships, attributes much of his success not only to hard work and talent, but to one powerful principle: absolute trust in his coach.

‎”When I first met Coach Grant Holloway,” Peters recalls, “he said, look, we’re going to rob a bank, but I’m going to blindfold you. All you got to do is just listen. I’m going to tell you where the bag is—leave everything else up to me.”

‎It’s not your typical athlete-coach conversation. But for Peters, it hit home. The message was clear: focus only on the work, trust the plan, and let the coach handle the rest.

‎”Every day, I’m walking in blindfolded. As a professional athlete, we don’t write the workouts. All we do is show up and do what’s on the paper… We’re going to rob this town blind,” asserted Peters.

‎The metaphor might sound dramatic, but it reflects a mindset rooted in discipline and surrender. Peters believes that second-guessing or overanalyzing workouts is not his role. His job? To give 110% every single day.

‎“I put on my blindfold every day. The bag of money’s in the corner on the second floor. All you got to do is just go grab it,” he says.

‎ “We literally just walk into the building, grab the bag, and walk out. All the thinking about why a muscle is tired—that’s not your job. Your job is to show up and work.”

‎It’s this laser-focused approach that has made Peters one of the few athletes to win back-to-back world titles in javelin. At just 20 years old, he turned professional and immediately began rewriting expectations. In Doha 2019, he took gold with a throw of 86.89m.

‎ Three years later in Eugene, Oregon, he launched 90.54m to defend his title—a throw that echoed around the world.

‎His story is more than athletic greatness. It’s a masterclass in mindset. By trusting his coach’s vision, surrendering control, and committing to the grind, Peters has simplified the formula for success: show up, do the work, believe in the plan.

‎And if you do that, he says, “you’re going to go up to the second floor every single day, grab the money, and you’ll be like, oh—this is easy now.”
