South African sprint star Akani Simbine continued his flawless 2025 campaign with a commanding victory in the men’s 100m at the Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday.
The veteran speedster, known for his explosive starts and smooth top-end speed, showcased his class by cruising through the heats and delivering a blistering performance in the final. Simbine comfortably won his heat in 10.13s (+1.7m/s) ahead of Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike, who clocked a Season’s Best (SB) of 10.20s.
But it was in the final where Simbine truly stamped his authority on the race. Akani Simbine blazed down the track and crossed the line in 9.86s, narrowly missing a world lead due to wind.
Onwuzurike once again secured second place in 10.05s, while Jamaica’s Deandre Daley rounded off the podium with a 10.12s finish.
Unbeaten Streak Continues
Simbine’s victory in Atlanta marks his fourth consecutive 100m win of the season, solidifying his status as one of the top sprinters to watch as the countdown to the World Championships in Tokyo gathers pace.
He already holds the official world-leading time of 9.90s, set at the Botswanan Golden Grand Prix last month. With his current form and confidence sky-high, the prospect of Simbine lowering that mark seems less a question of if, but when.
Eyes on Tokyo
As one of Africa’s most decorated sprinters, Simbine has made it clear that a 100m World Championship medal is firmly in his sights. His consistent performances and ability to deliver under pressure position him as a genuine contender on the global stage this summer.
The athletics world now eagerly awaits his next outing, with hopes high that he will officially lower the world lead and potentially rewrite the season’s record books.
