Italian high jump legend Gianmarco Tamberi will electrify Stadio Olimpico this Friday, 6 June, debuting at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea.

The 2021 Olympic champion and reigning Diamond League champion will be a late but electrifying addition to the startlist — and if history has taught us anything, it’s that when Tamberi competes in Rome, the atmosphere is simply unforgettable.

Speaking at the pre-event press conference, Tamberi expressed his excitement about returning to home soil:

“It’s always a pleasure to see your faces after a long time. I’m honored to be here again at the Golden Gala. The crowd here is amazing, giving support to Italian track and field is one of my biggest goals.”

Though Tamberi has lifted three Diamond Trophies in his career, one glaring omission from his glittering résumé is a victory at the Golden Gala, a feat he will chase for a seventh time this week.

Facing stiff competition from New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr, fresh from a win in Rabat, and Republic of Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok, the newly crowned Asian champion, Tamberi will rely heavily on the passion of his home fans to fuel his performance.

“It was very important to me to be present, to try and take the energy from the crowd and give it back. It means a lot,” Tamberi added.

A New Chapter Beyond the Track

Away from athletics, Tamberi is also embracing a personal milestone , he and his wife are expecting their first child. The soon-to-be father expressed joy, saying the life change gave him fresh purpose.

“Last year we were speaking about the future, and now we’re speaking about the present. I see my wife changing in a wonderful way, and I’m falling more in love with her and the little princess that’s coming. This baby, who I haven’t met yet, is already giving me energy and courage to keep going.”

Tamberi’s long-term focus remains on Los Angeles 2028, especially after the heartbreak in Paris.

With a stacked line-up and electric Roman atmosphere expected, the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea once again shapes up as one of the standout nights on the Diamond League calendar.
