Phethisang Makhethe delivered the best performance of her career at the Big Ten Championships in Eugene, Oregon, breaking the South African women’s hammer throw record. Competing for the University of Illinois on Friday, Makhethe launched a massive 68.66m throw on her sixth and final attempt, earning the silver medal. This throw surpassed the previous South African record of 67.95m, set by Leandri Holtzhausen in Tokyo earlier this year, by 71 centimetres.
However, Phethisang Makhethe, 22, narrowly missed the gold as American Anthonett Nabwe won with a meeting record throw of 69.85m. Makhethe’s new mark also improved her personal best by nearly two meters. Surpassing her previous best of 66.80m set earlier this month in Illinois.
James Moloi, President of Athletics South Africa, praised Makhethe’s achievement, saying,
“Well done, Phethisang, for this major achievement. Also, congratulations to the coach and support staff. We are very glad to recognise her progression, especially in one of the most difficult field events.”
Makhethe’s record-breaking throw highlights her rapid development and growing status in international hammer throw circles. Moreover, as she continues to compete at the collegiate level in the United States, she gains valuable experience that boosts her potential for future global competitions.
Athletics South Africa (ASA), the national governing body for athletics in South Africa, will now begin the standard ratification process for Makhethe’s new record. ASA oversees track and field, cross country, road running, and race walking in the country and is affiliated with World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics.
Makhethe’s breakthrough performance marks a significant milestone for South African women’s hammer throw, inspiring upcoming athletes and raising the profile of the discipline nationally and internationally.
