Brazil’s track sensation Alison dos Santos added another glittering chapter to his already illustrious career by setting a new world best in the rarely contested 200m hurdles at the Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday.
The reigning world 400m hurdles champion stormed down the straight to clock an incredible 21.85 seconds (+1.5 m/s), comfortably ahead of his rivals.
The race saw two-time NCAA champion Sean Burrell take an early lead, but it was dos Santos who surged ahead midway, showcasing his signature long strides and flawless hurdle technique to claim a commanding win. Burrell finished second in 22.30 seconds, while Caleb Dean took third.
Dos Santos time of 21.85 seconds smashed the previous world best of 22.10 seconds set by Britain’s Andrew Turner in 2011, marking a significant milestone for the Brazilian star as he continues to dominate the hurdles discipline across different formats.
This performance comes hot on the heels of Dos Santos bronze medal finish in the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and a series of impressive showings on the international circuit. Notably, he secured maximum points in the men’s long hurdles event at the Grand Slam Track Meet in Kingston, clocking 47.97 seconds at the Grand Slam Track Miami to claim his second consecutive series victory.
With the global athletics season heating up, Dos Santos versatility and dominance in both the traditional 400m hurdles and the challenging straight 200m hurdles solidify his status as one of the most electrifying talents in track and field today.
Fans and analysts alike now eagerly await his next appearance as he continues to build momentum ahead of the World Athletics Championships and other major meets on the 2025 calendar.
