World Athletics Championships: Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha Stunned as France’s Jimmy Gressier Snatches 10,000m World Title

by Beryl Oyoo

Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha saw his hopes of winning the men’s 10,000m title dashed at the finish line as he lost out to little-known Frenchman Jimmy Gressier in a dramatic finale at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday.

In a race slowed down by the sweltering conditions, Gressier held back in the chasing pack before producing a stunning late kick down the final straight.

The victory is a landmark achievement for Gressier, who had never won a major global title before this breakthrough moment. For Kejelcha, who also took silver at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, the wait for his first 10,000m crown continues. Kenya’s Ishmael Rokitto Kipkurui narrowly missed out on the podium after finishing fourth in 28:56.48.
