Ireland’s medal hopes at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have suffered a major setback after Rhasidat Adeleke confirmed she will not compete due to injury concerns.
The 22-year-old Dublin sprinter announced that she is “unable to finish this season” following what she described as “yet another recent roadblock.” Adeleke, who was set to feature in both the 200m and 400m events, revealed that persistent injuries and setbacks have hampered her ability to train and perform at her expected level.
“This season has tested me in more ways than I ever anticipated,” Adeleke wrote on Instagram.
“Lingering injuries and continuous setbacks made it increasingly difficult to train and perform at the level I expect from myself.”
Struggles on the Track
Adeleke’s struggles became more evident this summer as she failed to dip under 50 seconds in her three 400m Diamond League appearances. In July, she withdrew late from the 400m in Monaco, a race she had impressively won last year in 49.17 seconds.
Her absence follows a series of strong performances in recent years, including fourth-place finishes in the 400m final at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Focus on Recovery
The young sprinter said her decision to withdraw was difficult but necessary to ensure long-term success.
“Following yet another recent roadblock, I’m saddened to share that I’m unable to finish out this season,” she said as quoted by Irish Times.
“I’ll now take time to heal, recover and do what’s necessary, so I can show up next season as my best self, mind and body.”
She also expressed gratitude to her supporters.
“I’m so grateful to everyone that shows me unwavering support. It means the world.”
Adeleke’s absence will be felt most keenly in the women’s 4x400m relay team, which finished fourth at the Paris Olympics last year. Her explosive speed and consistency had made her one of Ireland’s standout athletes, and her withdrawal significantly dents the team’s medal chances in Tokyo.
