The 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships were expected to be a triumphant return for sprint sensation Sha’Carri Richardson. Instead, the event took a dramatic turn as swirling rumors, startling reports, and a sudden withdrawal have left the track and field world in shock.
Richardson, a fan favorite and reigning 100m world champion, had just begun to find her rhythm again following an injury-plagued start to her season. On Day 1 of the championships, she posted a season-best 11.07 seconds in the 100m preliminaries, securing her spot in the semifinals. With an entry in the 200m as well, fans were abuzz with anticipation.
But just as her campaign began to build momentum, the story took an unexpected and troubling turn.
Mysterious Withdrawal and Arrest Rumors
By Day 2, Richardson’s name was conspicuously missing from the start lists for both the 100m semifinals and the 200m events. No explanation was offered publicly by her camp, USATF, or meet organizers. Then came the whispers, and soon, a bombshell report.
According to a police report obtained by LetsRun.com, Richardson and her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, were involved in a physical altercation at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Sunday night, just before the championships got underway.
The report, filed by Officer Paul Chung of the Port of Seattle Police Department, described a disturbing scene caught on airport security cameras. As Richardson and Coleman exited the TSA screening area, the two were engaged in a heated verbal dispute. The situation escalated quickly.
“Richardson is following and getting close to Coleman several times as Coleman appears to be trying to walk away,” Officer Chung wrote.
“She then pushes Coleman hard enough that it sends him crashing into a nearby column… She throws a pair of headphones at Coleman, striking him somewhere on his body.”
Though the police report did not clarify what initiated the conflict, the visual evidence painted a troubling picture. Coleman reportedly attempted to walk away multiple times and even returned to the TSA lanes to seek help.
Despite the incident, Coleman declined to identify himself, refused to cooperate with officers, and insisted “nothing happened.” Police indicated that his lack of cooperation did not affect their handling of the case, as the video footage alone was considered sufficient evidence.

Fallout and Silence
The incident appears to have triggered Richardson’s abrupt removal from the championship events, though USATF has not issued an official statement. As of now, neither Richardson nor Coleman has publicly addressed the situation.
With the World Championships in Tokyo just weeks away, questions loom large: Will Richardson face disciplinary action from USATF or World Athletics? Will legal consequences follow? And perhaps most critically, can she regain the focus and form needed to defend her global title?
Sha’Carri Richardson’s path to redemption was already lined with pressure and expectation. Now, an off-track scandal threatens to derail it altogether. The silence from her camp and the governing bodies only fuels speculation, and until a public statement is made, uncertainty reigns.
