Jamaican sprint hurdler Danielle Williams is relishing the challenge ahead at the 50th edition of the Prefontaine Classic, set for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Taking to Instagram, the reigning world champion shared her excitement about the upcoming race, writing: “Powerful hurdles team … I am looking forward to Eugene.”
Williams will join a star-studded field in the women’s 100m hurdles. She’ll face fierce competition from compatriots Ackera Nugent and Megan Tapper, both of whom are coming off impressive showings at the Jamaican National Championships.
Nugent clocked a season’s best of 12.30, finishing second behind Tapper, who stormed to victory in thrilling fashion on Monday, June 30. The two will renew their rivalry on American soil, with Williams added to the mix in what promises to be a high-octane rematch.
Star-Field
The field is loaded with world-class talent. Nigerian sprint queen and world record holder Tobi Amusan who famously ran 12.12 on this very track during the 2022 World Championships. She will make her return to Hayward Field. The 28-year-old has been in brilliant form this season, recently claiming a sprint hurdles title in Ostrava with 12.45. She also finished second in Paris with a season-best 12.24.
She’ll race with the in-form Masai Russell, the reigning Olympic champion and American record holder. Russell, who lit up Eugene with a blazing 12.17 earlier this year, is now the second-fastest woman in history in the event behind Amusan.
Also confirmed for the Prefontaine Classic are Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, 2016 Olympic silver medalist Kendra Harrison, Alia Armstrong, Christina Clemons, and Tonea Marshall (PB 12.54), ensuring the event is brimming with depth.
Danielle Williams, opened her Diamond League campaign with a victory in Xiamen back in April clocking 12.53 to beat Grace Stark. She will be looking to build on that momentum. Known for her powerful finishes and competitive drive, the 2015 and 2023 world champion will be aiming to make another strong statement ahead of the World Championships later this year.
