Top 10 Fastest African women in the 100m

The fastest African women in the history of 100m have largely trailed spinters  from the rest of the world by a slight marging, with athletes from West Africa in particular dominating the continent’s all-time rankings. At the top of the list stands Ivorian sprint star Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, whose blistering 10.72 seconds remains the fastest time ever run by an African woman.

Ta Lou-Smith set the mark in 2022, cementing her status as one of the greatest sprinters the continent has produced. The time not only gave her the African record but also placed her among the fastest women in global athletics history. Known for her explosive starts and consistency in major finals, the Côte d’Ivoire star has spent much of her professional career training in the United States while representing her country on the world stage.

Close behind her in the rankings is fellow Ivorian Murielle Ahouré, who ran 10.78 seconds in 2016, a time that stood as the African record before Ta Lou-Smith lowered it. Ahouré’s achievements helped establish Côte d’Ivoire as a powerhouse in African women’s sprinting, particularly in the 100 m.

Nigeria also features heavily in the all-time list. Olympic and world championship medalist Blessing Okagbare holds the third-fastest time in African history with 10.79 seconds, set in 2013. Okagbare’s versatility across the sprints and long jump made her one of Africa’s most decorated track and field athletes during her peak years.

The list also reflects the depth of Nigerian sprinting talent over several generations. Athletes such as Mary Onyali, one of Nigeria’s pioneering sprint stars in the 1990s, and Damola Osayomi helped lay the foundation for the country’s continued success in the event. More recent stars like Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha show that the next generation of African sprinters is continuing to push the boundaries of speed.

Another name on the list is Gloria Alozie, who ran 10.90 seconds early in her career before later focusing primarily on the 100 m hurdles. Her presence highlights the versatility often seen among African athletes competing across sprint disciplines.

Together, these performances underline Africa’s growing influence in global sprinting. With several athletes consistently running under the 11-second barrier, the continent has become a major contributor to the depth of the women’s 100 m worldwide.
