The 22nd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is set to be the biggest yet, with a record 30,000 participants officially registered, prompting organizers to close registration a full month ahead of schedule.
Scheduled for 26 October 2025, the marathon has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings in 2003, when just 500 runners took part. Thousands of hopeful participants have been turned away this year due to overwhelming interest, highlighting the event’s rising profile both locally and internationally.
With 92 nationalities represented and 200 elite runners expected at the start line, the marathon continues to cement its status as a globally recognised race.
It remains a World Athletics Label Race and is an Abbott World Marathon Majors qualifying event, attracting top-tier talent and reinforcing Nairobi’s place on the global athletics map.
“We’ll provide a really exciting experience for the participants thanks to a 34% increase in revenue,” said Joyce Kibe, Head of Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya. “The consistency has worked for us.”
The event’s sponsorship base has also seen significant growth, with the total sponsorship rising from KSh173 million in 2024 to KSh233 million in 2025. Long-term sponsors like Prudential are maintaining their commitment, once again hosting the popular 5K Family Fun Race for the third consecutive year.
As part of their support, Prudential is offering free insurance for all runners, with medical treatment cover of up to KSh500,000 for race day emergencies. Meanwhile, Kwal and Heineken have doubled their support for the 21K race, contributing KSh10 million, signalling increased corporate backing of the event.
New and returning partners are also expanding the scope and inclusivity of the marathon. UNDP joins as a key sponsor, backing the 21K wheelchair race, while UN Women has partnered to enhance gender equality initiatives. The Future Makers initiative, which has so far utilised KSh850 million, continues its mission to uplift women living with disabilities in partnership with the Association of Persons with Disability in Kenya (APDK). This year’s marathon further emphasises inclusivity, aligning with Standard Chartered’s long-standing commitment to social impact.
Race-day logistics will be powered by a robust network of medical and support partners. Tetra Pak and ORS will provide hydration points along the route, while AAR and the Aga Khan Hospital are set to manage medical response.
For participants with young children, Kiss Kids will offer a specially designated Mother’s Room, ensuring that all runners – regardless of their caregiving responsibilities – can participate comfortably.
As the marathon continues to grow in stature, it also serves as a vital fundraising and awareness platform for various social causes.
This year’s edition builds on a legacy of charitable giving and community engagement, aligning elite sport with meaningful social transformation. With record-breaking participation, increased sponsorship, and a commitment to inclusion and excellence, the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon promises to be a landmark event in Kenya’s sporting calendar.
