Indian Teen Aman Malik Jailed for Three Years in Kenya After Admitting to Doping Charges

On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Magistrate’s Court at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport handed down three years sentence to 19-year-old Aman Malik, who was arrested earlier this year with prohibited performance-enhancing substances at a training camp in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet.

Malik faced four charges linked to doping. JKIA magistrate Njeri Thuku ruled that he serve 12 months on the first charge if he fails to pay a fine of KSh 1 million, and three years each on the remaining three counts. However, the court ordered that the terms run concurrently, meaning Malik will serve a total of three years behind bars.

The magistrate further directed that Malik be repatriated upon completing his sentence. She stressed that the ruling was meant to safeguard Kenya’s sporting heritage, noting the importance of clean athletics to the nation’s international reputation.

“Courts are called to protect society. Sometimes, they are the last hope for the populace that is ravaged by forces outside it,” said Hon. Njeri during the judgment.

The court also ordered that the seized prohibited substances, presented as evidence by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), be destroyed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board within 14 days unless Malik files an appeal.

Malik was arrested on May 5, 2025, during a multi-agency operation involving ADAK and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities recovered Human Growth Hormone (HGH), Melodonium, and Mannitol, substances banned in competitive sports. Unused IV bags and syringes were also discovered, raising suspicions that Malik may have been part of a wider doping syndicate.

ADAK welcomed the sentencing as a significant win in the fight against doping. The agency has been intensifying its efforts to protect the integrity of Kenyan athletics and ensure that athletes secure victories fairly.
