The United States successfully defended their women’s 4x100m relay crown at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, edging rivals Jamaica in a breathtaking finish that also marked the farewell of sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
The American quartet of Twanisha Terry, Kayla White, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sha’Carri Richardson combined to clock 41.75 seconds, just 0.04 ahead of Jamaica, who pushed them all the way. Germany secured bronze in 41.87, narrowly holding off Great Britain, while Spain, France and Canada followed. Poland failed to complete the race and was disqualified.

The victory delivered Jefferson-Wooden her third gold medal of the championships, after her stunning double in the 100m and 200m. It also made her only the second woman in history to sweep all three sprint titles at a single World Championships, joining none other than Fraser-Pryce, who first achieved the feat in 2013.

For Fraser-Pryce, this silver medal in Tokyo was the last chapter of her glittering career. The 38-year-old, an icon of Jamaican sprinting with multiple world and Olympic titles, bowed out on the podium, passing the baton, figuratively and literally, to a new generation of sprinters.
