Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands produced a sensational final-round throw to clinch gold in the women’s shot put at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Saturday (20).
The Dutch star denied American Chase Jackson a third successive world title, delivering the best performance of her career when it mattered most.

Schilder, a two-time European champion and bronze medallist at the 2022 Worlds, had been sitting in fifth place with 19.51m after four rounds. With the pressure on, she unleashed a massive 20.29m effort on her final attempt to surge into the lead and secure her first global outdoor crown. Jackson responded with her own big throw of 20.21m, but it was not enough to deny the Dutchwoman.
New Zealand’s Olympic silver medallist Maddison-Lee Wesche had led from the first round after equalling her personal best of 20.06m. For most of the competition, it looked as if the mark would hold for gold until Schilder’s dramatic finale. Wesche ultimately settled for bronze, while Canada’s Sarah Mitton narrowly missed the podium in fourth place.

The victory crowns a superb season for Schilder, who also captured gold at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn earlier this year and silver at the World Indoors in Nanjing. Her triumph signals her emergence as one of the sport’s new dominant forces.
