Tokyo, September 20, 2025 – The women’s 5000 metres final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 delivered an electrifying showdown that thrilled spectators and underscored Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running. Beatrice Chebet powered through in the final stretch to outsprint compatriot Faith Kipyegon, claiming the world title with an impressive time of 14:54.36.

Faith Kipyegon, the reigning world and Olympic champion in the 1500 metres who also holds multiple world titles, including the 5000m from 2023, finished just behind with a season-best 14:55.07. Chebet herself made history earlier in the championships by winning the 10,000 metres gold, aiming to complete a rare 5000m-10000m double that only a few women in history have achieved.

Below is the official timetable for the top finishers for the 5000m final

  • 1st: Beatrice Chebet (KEN) – 14:54.36

  • 2nd: Faith Kipyegon (KEN) – 14:55.07 (SB)

  • 3rd: Nadia Battocletti (ITA) – 14:55.42

  • 4th: Shelby Houlihan (USA) – 14:57.42

  • 5th: Gudaf Tsegay (ETH) – 14:57.82

  • 6th: Josette Andrews (USA) – 15:00.25

  • 7th: Marta García (ESP) – 15:01.02

  • 8th: Hannah Nuttall (GBR) – 15:01.25

From the outset, the race showcased an intense rivalry. Kipyegon, who had already secured her fourth consecutive world title in the 1500m earlier in these championships, set a strong pace that tested the field. Chebet strategically stayed close, conserving energy for a decisive final lap.

Chebet’s powerful finish in the last 200 metres ultimately saw her surge ahead of Kipyegon, claiming her first world championship gold in the 5000m and moving closer to completing a historic double at this championship. Her performance was a testament to her growing stature in distance running, having previously earned silver and bronze medals in past world championships.

Italian star Nadia Battocletti ran with fierce determination to secure the bronze, adding a significant highlight to her career with a time just fractions behind the Kenyan duo.

This 5000m final will be remembered as one of Tokyo 2025’s standout moments, illustrating the strategic depth, resilience, and competitive spirit of the world’s distance running elite. It also marks a milestone in Kenyan athletics, with both Chebet and Kipyegon continuing to push the boundaries of excellence on the global stage.
