Melissa Jefferson-Wooden etched her name into the history books at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo by becoming the first American woman to win both the 100m and 200m titles at a single edition of the global meet.
Coming into the championships with just one career individual global medal, a 100m bronze, Jefferson-Wooden will now leave Tokyo with two glittering golds.

Her achievement makes her only the second woman in the last three decades to complete the sprint double, joining Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who last did so in 2013.
After storming to 100m gold earlier in the week, Jefferson-Wooden capped her historic run with a 200m victory on Friday in a personal best and world-leading 21.68 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt secured silver nearly half a second back, while Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, the two-time defending champion, settled for bronze.
The final was missing some big names, including reigning Olympic champion Gabby Thomas and silver medalist Julien Alfred, both sidelined by injury.
But Jefferson-Wooden seized her moment, cementing her place among the world’s sprinting greats with a double triumph that will be remembered for years to come.
