World Athletics Championships 2025: Femke Bol Defends Women’s 400m Hurdles World Title

Femke Bol reaffirmed her dominance in the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking a world lead of 51.54 seconds to successfully defend her crown at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Friday, 19 September.

The Dutch star, who came into the championships as the red-hot favourite, delivered a commanding display at the Japan National Stadium.

With Olympic champion and world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone opting to focus on the 400m flat, the highly anticipated duel between the two rivals did not materialize. Still, Bol rose to the occasion, ensuring the crowd witnessed a memorable performance.

Jasmine Jones produced the race of her life to claim silver in a personal best of 52.08, while Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalová surprised many with bronze in a national record of 53.00.

Bol’s triumph capped off a superb season in which she remained unbeaten across eight straight 400m hurdles races. Earlier in Tokyo, she also anchored the Netherlands to silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Her winning time of 51.54 is the fastest of her career at a global championship, bettering her Budapest 2023 winning mark by 0.16 seconds.
