World Athletics Championships 2025: Katie Moon Tops Sandi Morris to Clinch Women’s Pole Vault Hat-Trick

by Beryl Oyoo

Katie Moon cemented her legacy in the women’s pole vault by claiming her third consecutive world outdoor title at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, the same venue where she struck Olympic gold four years ago.

The 34-year-old American cleared 4.90 meters on a dramatic do-or-die third attempt, overtaking her former training partner Sandi Morris. Morris, who had been chasing her first global outdoor crown, missed her last bid at 4.95m and settled for silver. The result marked Morris’ fifth career silver across the Olympics and World Championships.

Slovenia’s Tina Šutej secured bronze at 4.80m, delivering her first global outdoor medal at the age of 36. For Moon, the victory was historic, she became the first woman to achieve a hat-trick of pole vault world titles and the oldest champion in the event since its debut in 1999.

Her triumph capped a remarkable comeback story. In 2024, Moon battled Achilles tendinosis and endured a disappointing build-up to the Paris Olympics, where she still managed to win silver behind Nina Kennedy. With Kennedy absent in Tokyo due to injury, Moon seized the opportunity to reaffirm her dominance.

Now based in Oklahoma alongside her husband, Moon continues to work remotely with coach Brad Walker. The partnership has flourished, delivering her fifth U.S. indoor crown earlier this year and a second Diamond League title in August, momentum she carried into Tokyo to etch her name deeper into pole vault history.
