Canada’s Ethan Katzberg etched his name deeper into hammer throw history on Tuesday (16 September) as he claimed his third straight global title at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 23-year-old unleashed a monster 84.70m on his second attempt to set a championship record and secure gold, a throw that also made him the fifth-longest performer in history. Katzberg showed remarkable consistency, surpassing 81m with all six attempts, and even closed out with an 83.73m after the gold was already assured.

Germany’s Merlin Hummel produced the throw of his life, smashing his personal best with 82.77m to secure silver, while Hungary’s Olympic silver medallist Bence Halász collected his third world bronze with 82.69m.
Katzberg’s victory adds to a growing Canadian medal haul at the championships. Rogers, like Katzberg, is both Olympic and world champion, while Evan Dunfee secured Canada’s first gold in Tokyo with victory in the men’s 35km race walk.
