Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bolt has been unveiled as the ‘Ultimate Legend’ ahead of the highly anticipated first edition of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, set for Budapest from 11–13 September 2026.
The eight-time Olympic champion, whose career defined sprinting with world records, 19 senior global titles, and countless unforgettable moments, will partner with World Athletics to promote the new global season-ending event.
“This idea is brilliant: the absolute best of the best facing off, big names, big money, big personalities, no excuses. Let’s just say I would have loved to compete in this box-office championship,” Bolt said as quoted by World Athletics News.
“I’m honoured to take on the role of Ultimate Legend to help spread the word, as athletics is still a huge part of my life. The sport must continue to innovate, and this event will help showcase and grow track and field.”
A New Era for Athletics
The Ultimate Championship is designed to bring together the year’s most successful athletes, Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners, and top-ranked stars, for a three-day showdown at the National Athletics Centre.
Already, 26 athletes have booked automatic qualification as reigning Olympic champions. Winners at the upcoming World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, which Bolt will attend, will also earn their spots.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised the appointment:
“The title of Ultimate Legend is fitting for one of the true icons of our sport. Usain transcends athletics, elevating its profile and inspiring athletes worldwide. As we develop new ways to showcase the sport, it’s vital to also honour the trailblazers who shaped it.”

Budapest Ready to Host
Hungary’s Secretary of State for Sports, Dr. Ádám Schmidt, expressed excitement about the event’s impact:
“Hosting the Ultimate Championship allows us to inspire our people through the performances of the world’s best. Usain Bolt is a special figure who can motivate young people everywhere. With his help, this event will be just as successful as the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.”
Bolt will officially begin his ambassadorial duties at the World Championships in Tokyo (13–21 September 2025), marking the one-year countdown to the inaugural Ultimate Championship.
The Ultimate Championship aims to give athletics a fitting climax each season, ensuring fans, athletes, and broadcasters experience a finale with global resonance. Much like Bolt’s career, the event is built to push the sport to new heights.
