The 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich got off to a spectacular start on Wednesday as Nicola Olyslagers, Mondo Duplantis, and Joe Kovacs were among the first champions crowned in front of a vibrant city centre crowd.
Australian high jumper Nicola Olyslagers delivered the performance of her career, clearing 2.04m to claim her maiden Diamond League title. The mark not only secured victory but also set a new world lead and Oceania record, thrilling the thousands gathered at Zurich’s iconic Sechseläutenplatz.
Olyslagers’ duel with Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the defending champion, kept fans on edge. Mahuchikh passed at 2.04m to gamble at 2.06m, but could not find the winning clearance, conceding her first defeat in a Diamond League Final since 2021.
Earlier in the evening, the USA’s Katie Moon opened the day’s celebrations by clinching her second Diamond League pole vault crown in three years. Moon cleared 4.82m, edging out compatriot Sandi Morris in a close contest.
On the same temporary runway, pole vault superstar Mondo Duplantis claimed his fifth consecutive Diamond League title, keeping his stranglehold on the event. The Swedish world record holder soared over 6.00m, winning on countback against Greek challenger Emmanouil Karalis in a thrilling head-to-head battle. The pair embraced after collapsing onto the mat, highlighting the spirit of sportsmanship that defined the night.
American shot put powerhouse Joe Kovacs also had reason to celebrate, adding his name to the list of Zurich champions on day one of the two-day finale.
