Masai Russell Targets Unique Silver Prize in Pursuit of Track Glory

by Beryl Oyoo

Masai Russell has been one of the standout hurdlers on the track this season, cementing her status as one of the fastest women in the world.

At the Diamond League in Silesia, she blazed to a 12.36-second finish in the 100m hurdles, securing second place and reinforcing her spot among the global elite.

The American star has made history by becoming the only woman to run 12.1 seconds in multiple 100m hurdles races, recording three of the eight fastest times in just the past four months. In addition, she has surpassed legends like Yordanka Donkova and Ackera Nugent for the most sub-12.3 second finishes in a single season, achieving the feat four times.

But for Russell, it’s not just about times and records. She has set her sights on a different kind of prize: the 1.4-pound sterling silver crown awarded to winners at Athlos NYC, crafted by Tiffany & Co. and valued as much for its prestige as for its artistry.

“Like going into Athlos, of course, the goal is to get to World Championships,” Russell said after her Silesia performance.

“And then after that, just take it on as another meet to finish out the season. Trust me, I’ll be ready to run, and I’m ready to get that crown that I didn’t get last year. But it’s alright.”

The crown itself is an object of desire for many athletes, 4.25 inches high, 7.2 inches in diameter, and taking 10 weeks to handcraft. Alongside the $60,000 prize purse, it symbolizes entry into an exclusive club of track champions.

Frustration at Athlos 2024

Russell’s motivation for 2025 is deeply personal. At Athlos NYC 2024, she missed out on the crown after clocking 12.44 seconds in the final. Later, she admitted frustration over what she considered a flawed race start.

“There’s movement going on at the start. That race should have been called back,” Russell said on Grand Slam Track with Tiara Williams.

“I wasn’t mad about my performance because I still did what I needed to do. But I just know if it was a fair race, I would have been more happy with the outcome.”

Despite her protests, Russell walked away with a bronze medal, later reflecting on social media.

12.44 in a ‘catch up’ race to end an unforgettable season… I guess you can call me a rookie and a vet.”

A Fiercer Return

With her consistent form this season, Russell heads into Athlos NYC with sharper focus and greater determination. This time, she’s chasing redemption and the silver crown that slipped away.

Fans can expect Russell to stand her ground against elite rivals like Gabby Thomas and Brittany Brown, leaving little room for distractions at the start line.

And if her recent performances are any indication, Masai Russell could well crown her season in New York, with silver on her head and glory on the track.
