Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi is gearing up for a shot at athletics history as she aims to break the one-mile steeplechase world record at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels on August 22.
The 2024 Olympic champion and 2023 Diamond League winner has cemented her status among the greatest 3000m steeplechasers in recent years. Known for her relentless pace and tactical brilliance, Yavi has twice come close to rewriting the record books, most memorably at last year’s Diamond League in Rome where she fell just 0.07 seconds shy of Beatrice Chepkoech’s 3000m steeplechase world record.

Now, she sets her sights on a less familiar version of the event. While the one-mile steeplechase is not part of the standard Diamond League programme offers Yavi the chance to etch her name into a new chapter of the sport’s history.
Her place in the 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final is already secure after a victory in Eugene and podium finishes in Doha and Oslo. The Brussels race will therefore be all about chasing time, and perhaps, immortality.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in world athletics, featuring 15 top-tier events. Athletes gather points across 14 regular season meets, with the best earning a coveted spot in the two-day Final, set for 27–28 August 2025 in Zurich.
