Diamond League Prefontaine Classic: Kishane Thompson Secures First Diamond League Victory in Men’s 100m

by Beryl Oyoo

Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson continued his red-hot form with an emphatic win in the men’s 100m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday (5 July).

Thompson, a silver medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was untouchable for most of the race and though he slightly tightened in the final metres, he crossed the line comfortably in 9.85 seconds.

Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes produced a strong finish to clock a season’s best 9.91 for second place, with American Trayvon Bromell claiming third in 9.94.

Results from the men’s 100m

Kishane Thompson (JAM) 9.85

Zharnel Hughes (GBR) 9.91

Trayvon Bromell (USA) 9.94

Brandon Hicklin (USA) 9.98

Ackeem Blake (JAM) 10.03

Bayanda Walaza (RSA) 10.04

Christian Coleman (USA) 10.06

Lachlan Kennedy (AUS) 10.07

Jeremiah Azu (GBR) 10.20

The result further fuels anticipation for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where Thompson, undeterred by Noah Lyles’ Olympic gold in Paris, has confidently declared his intention to chase the world title.
