American middle-distance runner Craig Engels has confirmed his next race after missing out on the 2025 Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, United States.
In a recent Instagram Story, Craig Engels confirmed the news of him not participating due to the entry field being full. He wrote; “Won’t be racing at the Pre Classic in Eugene this year as the field was full…”
However he hinted on his next race which he describes as being on of the best in the world; “next race is one of my favorite races in the world — @murpheyclassic.”
He’ll now turn his focus to the 9th Annual Ed Murphey Classic, set for July 11–12, in Memphis, Tennessee. The event, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet, has become a go-to destination for elite athletes and fans alike, offering high-level competition with a vibrant, music-filled Southern backdrop.
At 31, Engels remains one of the sport’s most recognizable and charismatic figures. He first made headlines in 2017, finishing third in the 1500 meters at Hayward Field while rocking a flowing mullet that instantly made him a crowd favorite. Since then, he’s compiled an impressive résumé. He won the U.S. 1500m title in 2019, representing Team USA at the World Championships in Doha, and clocking a personal best of 3:33.64 in 2021.
Known for his laid-back personality and offbeat charm, Engels has embraced a nomadic lifestyle, living out of an RV, enjoying hot tub sessions, and pulling pranks with his dad.
But behind the humor lies a serious competitor. After battling an Achilles injury earlier last year, he returned in strong form, running 1:46.00 in the 800 meters and winning the mile at the St. Louis Track Club/HOKA Festival of Miles.
Engels also competed at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing ninth in the 1500m. Though he once hinted at retiring, especially after narrowly missing the Tokyo Olympic team in 2021, he has remained committed to the sport.
