Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan is set to headline the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon as the event makes its historic debut on the Abbott World Marathon Majors calendar.
The Dutch distance running star, won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. She will line up in Sydney on Sunday, August 31, bringing global spotlight to Australia’s newest Major.
Hassan’s presence marks a significant moment for the race and the country’s running community. With a personal best of 2:13:44, recorded in Chicago in 2023 and still the third-fastest time in women’s marathon history. She enters as a clear contender to break Sydney’s course record of 2:21:41.
Hassan, delivered a remarkable performance in Paris where she won marathon gold less than 48 hours after claiming bronze in the 10,000m, and six days after earning another bronze in the 5000m. She recently added another podium to her collection with a third-place finish at the 2025 TCS London Marathon.
Sifan Hassan, who was born in Ethiopia and later resettled in the Netherlands as a refugee, says she is eager to bring her story and spirit to Australian fans.
“Running has given me so much, on and off the track,” she said. “It’s helped me connect with people, share my journey, and show that no matter where you begin, great things are possible. I feel honoured to be part of Sydney’s first race as a World Marathon Major.”
Australian Athletics President Jane Fleming welcomed the news, describing Hassan’s participation as a truly special moment.
“To see an athlete of her calibre, an Olympic champion, a role model, a trailblazer, competing here is inspiring,” Fleming said. “It’s the kind of moment that can spark dreams in the next generation, especially young girls watching her run.”
