Beatrice Chebet Hails Prudence Sekgodiso After Brilliant Ostrava Run

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet has showered praise on South African middle-distance star Prudence Sekgodiso following her standout performance at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Tuesday night.

Sekgodiso stormed to victory in the women’s 800m, clocking 1:57.16 to set a new meet record. This was just 0.1 seconds faster than her previous personal best. The 22-year-old World Indoor champion showed class and composure to dominate the race.

Chebet, the double Olympic gold medalist , took to Instagram to congratulate Prudence Sekgodiso, sharing a message of support with heart emojis, a gesture that captured the growing camaraderie among elite African athletes.

Sekgodiso has been on a steady rise over the past few seasons. She clocked a world-leading 1:57.26 in Marrakesh during her first international 800m race of the 2024 season. At the 2025 Stockholm Diamond League, she finished third in 1:58.00 behind Kenya’s Mary Moraa and Great Britain’s Georgia Hunter-Bell.

In March, Sekgodiso made history by winning South Africa’s first-ever women’s medal at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. Her time of 1:58.40 in the final not only earned her a podium finish but also set a new national indoor record.

Meanwhile, Chebet who kicked off her 2025 season with a commanding victory at the Xiamen Diamond League meet by winning the women’s 5000m race in a world-leading and meeting record time of 14:27.12 has been impressive throughout.

She had a super sensational performance at the Diamond League meeting in Rome. She stormed to a 14:03.69 finish, the second-fastest 5000m in history. This was behind Gudaf Tsegay’s world record of 14:00.21 set at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic. 

World athletics Championships in Tokyo is looming, and both athletes are fine tuning their form for a a major show at the global stage
