Nairobi — Luiz Mauricio Da Silva of Brazil delivered a stunning performance at the ABSA Kip Keino Classic on Saturday, clinching the men’s javelin title with a commanding throw of 86.34 meters. In a fiercely competitive field packed with Olympic medalists and world champions, Da Silva’s winning effort stood out as he edged past some of the sport’s biggest names.

Meanwhile, the competition featured a star-studded lineup, including Germany’s Thomas Rohler. The 2016 Olympic champion, who threw 80.79 meters to finish second. On the other hand, Portugal’s Leandro Ramos secured third place with a solid 80.68 meters.

On the other hand, Kenya’s javelin legend Julius Yego, a crowd favourite and 2016 Olympic silver medalist, threw 78.74 meters to finish fourth, showing he remains a strong contender on home soil.

However, Da Silva’s victory came as a surprise to many, given the presence of seasoned veterans like Anderson Peters of Grenada, a two-time world champion, who managed 76.80 meters and finished seventh. The USA’s Curtis Thompson (77.83m) and Belgium’s Timothy Herman (77.14m) also put in competitive performances but fell short of challenging the podium.

Throughout the event, Da Silva displayed remarkable composure and technical skill, consistently delivering powerful throws that kept him ahead of the pack. His triumph marks a significant milestone in his career and highlights the increasing global depth in men’s javelin.

Kenya’s Alex Toroitich Kiprotich (74.17m) and India’s Kishore Jena (73.06m) also competed. Rounding out a diverse and competitive field. Greece’s Ioannis Kyriazis finished with a throw of 60.02 meters.

The ABSA Kip Keino Classic once again proved to be a premier athletics meet, delivering thrilling competition and showcasing emerging talents. Da Silva’s breakthrough win sets the stage for an exciting javelin season ahead.
