Letsile Tebogo, Botswana’s rising sprint star and 2024 Olympic 200m champion, issued a bold call for greater financial support. Tebogo calls after the 2025 Rabat Diamond League. Despite struggling with a recurring injury that caused him to finish last in the 100m, Tebogo used the platform to highlight the severe financial challenges faced by many African athletes.

Meanwhile, Letsile Tebogo explained that limited local sponsorship forces athletes to bear high costs travelling abroad for competitions. Moreover, he urged sponsors and stakeholders to invest more heavily in regional African meets.  To help reduce travel expenses and create a stronger competitive environment on the continent.

“If we want to unlock Africa’s true potential in sprinting, we need better funding and more local opportunities,” Tebogo said.

Tebogo is currently sponsored by global brands De Beers and TAG Heuer. In addition, he emphasised that increased investment could nurture young talent and help Africa produce a new generation of world-class sprinters.

He believes that with proper financial backing, African athletes can challenge and even surpass the dominance of traditional sprinting powerhouses like the USA and Jamaica.

Tebogo’s passionate appeal shines a light on the broader issue of underfunding in African athletics. Additionally, Tebogo has called on sponsors, governments, and athletics federations to work together to build sustainable support systems.

“We have the talent, but we need the resources,” he stressed. “Investing in African track and field is not just good for athletes; it’s good for the sport globally.”

As one of Africa’s brightest sprinting stars, Tebogo’s message resonates deeply across the continent. His vision is clear: a future where African athletes compete at home and abroad with the financial and structural support they deserve. Paving the way for more Olympic and world champions from the region.

In conclusion, Letsile Tebogo’s 2025 Rabat Diamond League speech marks a pivotal moment in African athletics. His call for major sponsor investment aims to transform the sport, reduce financial barriers, and unlock the continent’s vast sprinting potential. The world will be watching as Tebogo and his peers push for change and strive for greatness on the global stage.
