Olympian and middle-distance star Heather MacLean is set to make her professional debut in the 5,000 meters, signaling a new chapter in an already decorated career.

The 29-year-old American, best known for her prowess in the 1500m, made the announcement via Instagram during an interview , expressing both excitement and readiness for the new challenge.

“I’m feeling very excited to feature in something totally out of my comfort zone,” said MacLean. “It’s just like a new vibe to me, so I feel ready—more than ever—to run the 5K. Right now, I’m 29, so I’m trying new things.”

MacLean has built a stellar career on the track. A former walk-on at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She rose to national prominence with a breakout performance at the 2021 U.S. Olympic   Trials, where she placed third in the 1500m to book her ticket to Tokyo 2020. Since then, she has represented Team USA at multiple World Championships and indoor meets.

In 2025, Heather MacLean has continued to impress her career. She ran a remarkable 4:17.01 indoor mile at Boston University, making her the second-fastest American woman of all time indoors and fourth fastest globally. She also placed seventh in the 1500m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow earlier this year.

While her exact professional debut date in the 5,000m hasn’t been confirmed, speculation points toward a summer meet. Possibly part of the Grand Slam Track series. Known for her devastating kick and tactical maturity, MacLean’s move to the 5K could pose a fresh threat to the long-distance field.
