The 6th edition of the ABSA Kip Keino Classic World Continental Tour will take place on 31st May at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. Organisers moved the event from its original location, Nyayo Stadium, to accommodate growing audience numbers and improved facilities.
This year, the Kip Keino Classic has attracted a record 189 athletes from all over the world. Underlining its status as one of Africa’s premier track and field events. In addition, Kenya will field a strong team of 53 athletes.The group is led by World 800m Champion Mary Moraa, her sister Sarah Moraa, and 150m African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala.
Moreover, Meet Director Barnaba Korir praised the event’s growth. Recalling how the inaugural edition at Nyayo Stadium in 2020 helped Kenya qualify for three sprint events at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo this September.
“The Kip Keino Classic has become a launchpad for Kenyan sprinters to shine on the global stage,” Korir said.
Meanwhile, Mwihaki Wachira, Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Kenya, celebrated the bank’s six-year partnership with the event. She announced a renewed sponsorship of Sh60 million for this year’s edition. Reaffirming Absa’s commitment to athletics in Kenya.
“The Kip Keino Classic is more than a race, it’s a national moment. Sports unite us and spur economic growth,” said Mwihaki Wachira, the Absa Bank Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
On the other hand, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya expressed confidence that the event would draw over 10,000 spectators. He highlighted the positive impact of the Kip Keino Classic on Kenya’s sporting reputation and community spirit.
“Ulinzi meets international standards, and any remaining issues are being resolved to ensure a world-class experience for athletes and spectators alike,” Mvurya said during the event’s launch in Nairobi.
Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also added that, Ksh. 300 million has been approved and earmarked for the Kip Keino Classic. A a government show of solidarity towards the growth of sports.
“Hosting the Kip Keino Classic is not just a sporting milestone, it’s an opportunity for Kenya to shine. We’re investing heavily to reward our athletes and uplift the sporting sector,” said the Sports CS.
With a star-studded lineup and robust local support, the event promises to deliver world-class performances. It also aims to strengthen Kenya’s position on the global athletics map.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports is rolling out 37 talent academies across the country. It aims to link elite events like the Kip Keino Classic with grassroots development. Bridging the gap between potential and performance.
