Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley has faced his share of challenges in 2025, however he is showing the world that setbacks don’t define his journey. After a turbulent start to the year, Kerley’s resilience was on full display as he made a powerful return to track and field.

A Rocky Start to 2025

Kerley’s struggles began at the Kingston Grand Slam Track, where a rare 7th-place finish in a race that was supposed to be another showcase of his elite talent. But things took a darker turn shortly after. As anticipation built for his performance at the Miami Grand Slam Tour, the headlines quickly shifted from “Fred Kerley awaited in Miami” to “Fred Kerley arrested in Miami”. This came after an alleged altercation with his ex-girlfriend, fellow Olympian Alaysha Johnson. The incident, which involved a reported assault, saw Kerley arrested and later released on bond. The scandal raised questions about his future in the sport.

Kerley’s Resilient Comeback

Just a few months later, Kerley had a chance to silence his critics and reclaim his place among the sport’s elite. From May 8th to 10th, the APU Franson Last Chance Invite, hosted by Azusa Pacific University, provided the perfect stage for a comeback. With his critics watching closely, Kerley took to the track in a custom black speed suit by Rad Yo, determined to prove that he still had what it takes to be a top contender.

In the opening round of the 100 meters, Kerley clocked an impressive 9.95 seconds, a time that immediately silenced doubts about his form. But it didn’t stop there. In the semifinals, Kerley ran an even faster 9.87 seconds (+2.9).

His girlfriend, Cleo Rahman, known as DJ Sky High Baby, shared her support on her X account.

Fan Support and Redemption

Despite the turbulence of early 2025, Kerley’s fans have rallied behind him. Social media was abuzz with admiration for the sprinter’s resilience.

One fan tweeted, “This time in the media and all the stuff with the police finna turn Fred Kerley into a monster.”

Another couldn’t help but marvel at his comeback, writing, “This guy gets locked up and still drops a sub-10 a week later 🤣🤣😭😭”. Fred Kerley posted two impressive sub-10s in the round and semifinal, plus a wind-legal 9.98 in the final.

In the face of adversity, Kerley has proven that his mental toughness is just as strong as his physical prowess. With his solid performances and the unwavering support of his fans and loved ones, he has begun to rebuild his reputation as one of the sport’s premier sprinters.
