Great Britain’s women’s 4x100m relay team delivered a stunning performance to capture gold at the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25, clocking an impressive 42.21 seconds in a dramatic final held at the Guangzhou Olympic Centre Stadium on Sunday night.
Anchored by the sensational Success Eduan, the British quartet overcame a three-team deficit on the final leg. Eduan produced a blistering anchor leg, reeling in the leaders to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in what was a pulsating contest from start to finish.
Spain’s national team surprised many with a remarkable performance, taking the silver medal in 42.28 seconds, a season’s best for them. The Spanish quartet had led at the 300m mark, recording 32.06 seconds, but Eduan’s relentless charge in the final 100m saw Great Britain edge ahead by 0.07 seconds.
Jamaica, one of the pre-race favorites, secured the bronze medal with a 42.33 seconds finish, while the USA — often dominant in sprint relays — narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in 42.38 seconds.
The race analysis highlighted a tight contest from the first exchange, with Great Britain clocking 11.26 seconds on the opening leg — the fastest 100m split of the race. Spain responded with a strong second and third leg, holding a slender lead into the final changeover, but it was Eduan’s explosive anchor that proved decisive.
Canada finished fifth in a national record time of 42.46 seconds, followed by Belgium (42.85s) and the Netherlands (43.21s). Germany unfortunately did not finish (DNF) after a mishap in the third exchange zone, despite a promising start.
The top 14 nations per relay at World Relays qualified for the World Championships set for 13–21 September 2025 in Tokyo.
