Athletics South Africa (ASA) has unveiled a provisional national squad of 70 athletes for the upcoming CAA African U18 and U20 Championships, scheduled to take place in Abeokuta, Nigeria, from 16–20 July 2025.
The team features standout youth and junior athletes who clinched gold medals at the ASA U16, U18, U20, and U23 Track and Field Championships held in Cape Town in March.
The provisional selection comprises 33 U18 athletes (16 girls and 17 boys) and 37 U20 athletes (18 girls and 19 boys), all of whom will be aiming to fly the South African flag high on the continental stage.
Headlining the team is world junior champion Bayanda Walaza, who will compete in the U20 men’s 100m sprint. He will be joined by Njabulo Mbatha (400m hurdles) and Sihle Mahlangu (400m), both of whom played key roles in the South African 4x400m relay team that won silver at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru last year.
Team South Africa will be targeting a return to the top of the medal standings after earning an impressive haul of 30 medals — including 13 gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze — at the 2023 African U18 and U20 Championships in Zambia.
The final national squad will be confirmed closer to the continental showpiece in Nigeria.
