Track legend Michael Johnson recently announced a $50,000 donation of new track equipment for each Grand Slam Track location, including Kingston, Jamaica. Jamaican officials, however, clarified that they have not reached a final agreement and have not yet received the promised gear.
Michael Johnson’s announcement
Johnson, the founder of the Grand Slam Track series, revealed that each host venue would receive approximately $50,000 worth of equipment to support youth athletes. The first edition of the series took place in Kingston, Jamaica, followed by a second event in Miramar, Florida.
In a video shared by Grand Slam Track, Johnson stated: “We’ve left over $50,000 of brand-new track equipment for youth athletes in each slam location. Kingston, Jamaica, and now Ansin Sports Complex, Miramar.”
JAAA Responds
Despite Johnson’s announcement, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has confirmed that discussions are still ongoing, with no formal confirmation of the donation.
An executive member of the JAAA Ian Forbes, told Sportsmax.TV that while talks took place, nothing is finalized yet.
“Yes, we’ve had discussions, and we’ve also followed up in writing based on those discussions regarding the possible donation of equipment. But nothing has been finalised just yet,” Forbes said.
He further explained that the association was still verifying the details of the donation, including the exact value and type of equipment promised.
Forbes confirmed that the JAAA does not yet have possession of any equipment.
“Not in our possession as yet, no,” he said.
“We would’ve hoped to have wrapped things up earlier, but once they left Jamaica, their focus understandably shifted to the next leg of the series. Now that there’s a bit of a breather, we’re hoping to conclude discussions and get a clearer picture soon.”
Forbes reported that the donation would include hurdles, starting blocks, and similar gear, but not running shoes.
The Grand Slam Track series will continue with upcoming events in Philadelphia (May 30 – June 1) and Los Angeles (June 27 – 29). Meanwhile, Jamaican officials remain hopeful that discussions with Johnson’s team will soon lead to a confirmed donation.
