Norwegian superstar Karsten Warholm continued his unstoppable form, storming to victory in the 400m hurdles at the Wanda Diamond League in Shanghai with a world-leading time of 47.28 seconds. The three-time world champion extended his winning streak, further cementing his status as the man to beat in the event.
Just a week after setting a 300m hurdles world best (33.05) in Xiamen, Warholm shifted back to his signature event and delivered another masterclass. His Shanghai performance marks his third Diamond League title, adding to an already legendary resume that includes Olympic gold and multiple global medals.
The race saw Brazil’s Matheus Lima secure a lifetime best of 48.08s for second place, while Sweden’s Carl Bengtstrom claimed third in 48.72s.
Warholm’s early-season speed is particularly noteworthy. In 2021, after opening his campaign with a 300m hurdles world best (33.26), he went on to shatter the 400m hurdles world record (46.70) in Oslo. This year, he’s already faster than his 2021 opener, raising expectations for another historic run.
The current 400m hurdles world record (45.94), set by Warholm at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, is nearly a second quicker than the previous mark. After securing Olympic silver in 2023, the Norwegian’s blistering start to 2024 signals his determination to reclaim gold at this year’s Paris Olympics and chase a historic fourth world title at the Tokyo World Championships.
As the Diamond League circuit progresses, all eyes will be on the 28-year-old phenom to see if he can continue rewriting history.
